Measure the space where concrete will be placed. If you only know a nominal tube size, treat the resulting quantity as an approximation.
Concrete volume for round forms
Use the actual inside diameter if you can measure it; a nominal tube size may differ from the internal opening.
How to calculate Sonotube concrete volume
The form acts like a cylinder. Its inside diameter determines the filled cross-sectional area.
Cylinder volume in ft³ equals π × (inside diameter in feet ÷ 2)² × fill height in feet, multiplied by the count of forms.
Add net ft³ for all different diameters and fill heights, apply one explicit waste allowance, then estimate whole bags or ready-mix ordering.
Worked example: eight 12-inch forms at 4 feet
For eight forms with a measured 12 in inside diameter and 4 ft fill height: π × (0.5 ft)² × 4 ft × 8 = 25.13274 ft³. That is approximately 0.93084 yd³, before allowance.
Check the arithmetic
- Net volume: 8 × π × (12 ÷ 24)² × 4 = 25.13274 ft³
- 5% allowance: 25.13274 × 1.05 = 26.38938 ft³
- Named bag yield, if selected: ceil(26.38938 ÷ 0.60) = 44 bags
Avoid these Sonotube estimating mistakes
Small diameter changes can affect the material order more than you expect.
Sonoco's published FAQ states that a nominal tube can have an inside diameter as much as 1 inch larger than its labeled size. A 13-inch actual inside diameter instead of 12 inches increases the estimated concrete volume about 17.4% at the same fill height. Measure the actual opening before ordering.
If the inside diameter doubles at a constant fill height, the volume becomes four times as large.
This material calculator does not determine local frost depth, soil bearing capacity or the dimensions necessary for safe foundations.
8, 10 and 12 inch Sonotube concrete per foot
These values assume measured internal diameters and exactly one foot of concrete-filled height. They do not prescribe a safe form size or footing depth.
| Inside diameter | Concrete per foot | Cubic yards per foot | 80 lb bags for one 1-ft form* |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 in | 0.349 ft³ | 0.0129 yd³ | 1 |
| 10 in | 0.545 ft³ | 0.0202 yd³ | 1 |
| 12 in | 0.785 ft³ | 0.0291 yd³ | 2 |
*The bag example uses QUIKRETE Concrete Mix No. 1101 at approximately 0.60 ft³ per 80 lb bag, zero extra allowance, and rounds one form up to whole bags. When filling several tubes, multiply the unrounded volume before calculating combined bags. Check actual inside diameter and the Sonotube product guidance. Use the calculator above for different heights and grouped tubes.
What to verify before filling cylindrical forms
The calculation uses the actual inside diameter and filled height of each round form, not the nominal outside size.
- Measure the form opening and required filled height rather than estimating from the outside wall.
- Keep different form diameters or heights in separate groups, then total their material quantities.
- Confirm local footing depth, ground conditions and reinforcement with the project requirements or a qualified professional.
Sonotube Concrete Calculator FAQs
Answers to real measurement and purchase questions. Product data and field conditions can change actual requirements.
Do I use nominal or actual Sonotube diameter?
Use actual inside diameter when available. Sonoco says its nominal tube inside diameter may be up to 1 inch larger than the label; if only the label is known, treat the result as approximate and remeasure before purchasing.
How many bags fill a 12-inch-by-4-foot Sonotube?
The answer depends on actual inside diameter, chosen bag yield and waste. This page lets you enter the product yield rather than assuming all bags are interchangeable.
Can I calculate different Sonotube sizes together?
Yes. Add tube groups with their own diameter, height and quantity, then calculate one combined volume and material order.
Does this calculator tell me how deep footings must be?
No. Footing depth and structural design depend on engineering requirements and local building codes.
Before you order materials
These checks apply to the calculator above and help prevent expensive mistakes.
ft / in / ft³ / yd³ and product bag coverage all mean different things. Change a value only when you know the unit.
The geometric amount, adjusted quantity and supplier purchase increments should not be mistaken for one another.
Official product data is a starting point for planning. Check installation specifications and local requirements before use.
